4 Essential Moving Tips

You Move Me Milwaukee’s Todd Yergens recently helped FOX 6 reporter Brian Kramp pack for his upcoming move.

Watch the video to see Todd share the best ways to pack a cooler for perishables, clothes (if you don’t have a wardrobe box) and shoes using old wine boxes. Try the following tips!

Essential Moving Tip #1: Packing Plates

After you’ve wrapped your plates in packing paper, stand them up on their rims in a small or medium box. Never lay them flat as they become much easier to break. Watch Todd give a visual demonstration in this video.

Essential Moving Tip #2: Packing Clothes

Instead of folding and boxing all your shirts and pants with their hangers, use a wardrobe box. Our wardrobe is extra awesome because when you’re done moving, the box becomes a collapsible spaceship fort for the kids!

If you don’t have a wardrobe box, Todd demonstrates an easy alternative using a garbage bag. You can also see that in FOX 6 segment here.

Essential Moving Tip #3: Packing Shoes

A great tip for packing shoes is to use old wine boxes! If you’re afraid that your shoes might lose shape, stuff their tips with socks or tissue paper.

Essential Moving Tip #4: Packing Perishables

  1. Pack your cooler as close to departing as possible so contents don’t warm up while you wait to move out.
  2. Freeze juice and water beforehand, and pack them last. If you’re worried about drips, pack the frozen items in resealable bags. Place frozen items on top of the cooler’s contents because cool air travels down.
  3. Pack the cooler last so it can be the first thing you unpack when you arrive at your new home.

Food items that (surprisingly) don’t need to be refrigerated:

  • Salted butter in an air tight container
  • Ketchup
  • Tomatoes, apples, berries
  • Jam
  • Kraft grated parmesan cheese – Unlike most cheese, this cheese doesn’t need to be refrigerated after opening.
  • Bread

Happy moving!
