Packing is one of the more stressful parts of any move, and fragile items like wine glasses and coffee mugs require a little extra care to make it to your new home in one piece. Here’s how the pros do it.
How to Pack Wine Glasses for Moving
Wine glasses are fragile at the best of times, and the stem is the most vulnerable part. Taking a few extra minutes to pack them correctly is worth it.
- Wrap each glass individually. Start by stuffing the interior of the glass with packing paper, then wrap the paper around the stem before wrapping the rest of the glass. The stem is the most likely point of breakage, so give it extra attention.
- Keep wine glasses together. Don’t mix wine glasses with other kitchenware in the same box. If you want to go a step further, cell boxes are specifically designed for packing glasses and add an extra layer of protection.
- Fill any gaps. Once the glasses are packed, fill any empty space in the box with crumpled newspaper or packing paper so the glasses can’t shift during transport.
- Seal and label the box. Close the box securely and write “Fragile” clearly on the outside.
How to Pack Coffee Mugs So They Don’t Break
Coffee mugs are sturdier than wine glasses but still need proper packing to survive a move without chips or cracks.
- Prepare the box first. Line the bottom of the box with a layer of bubble wrap or crumpled newspaper before anything goes in. That cushioning layer absorbs impact from below.
- Protect the inside of each mug. Fill the interior of each mug with crumpled packing paper. This helps the mug absorb any impact if the box gets jostled during the move.
- Wrap the outside. Use two to three layers of packing paper around the outside of each mug for added protection.
- Fill the gaps. Just like with wine glasses, fill any empty space in the box with extra newspaper so nothing moves around in transit.
- Seal and label. Close the box tightly and mark it “Fragile” on the outside.
