Eco-friendly ways to keep your new home clean

We all know that moving takes a lot of effort. All too often the stress of moving overshadows the joy of a new home and the new opportunities it can bring. Keeping your new place clean and clutter free is a great way to make the most of your space. Here are our top tips on the little things you can do to keep your new home or office looking fresh and smelling great the natural way.

Make your own natural cleaners before you move

This way you will have them to hand as soon as you reach your new home. Homemade cleaners work well and have the added advantage of being completely nontoxic. They are easy to make from just a few ingredients (vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda to name a few common ingredients), yet together they make powerful cleaners that should not be underestimated!

Dust, dust and dust again!

All homes share one thing in common and that’s dust! When dusting, don’t use a feather duster or similar as they will simply stir dust back into the air where it can be more easily inhaled. Instead try using a damp microfiber cloth. Frequently rinsed microfiber cloths will help you to actually remove dust rather than re-distribute it.

Vacuum and steam clean your carpets and upholstery before you move

Vacuum using a machine that has a HEPA filter will trap dust and prevent it being redistributed back into the air like with many other vacuums. Vacuuming before moving in will help rid your new home of dust mites and other potentially irritating particles, keeping allergies at bay. Steam cleaning carpets and upholstery after vacuuming is also a great way of keeping dust mites at bay and will give your new home that deep clean, fresh start.

Consider the air quality

Rather than clean the air in your new home, most room deodorizers actually make it more dangerous to breathe without actually removing odors. While moving, try opening all windows as much as possible to let fresh air in. If a scented room is more your thing, try putting a few drops of your favorite essential oil such as lavender in a bowl of water and placing on a radiator or make your own natural air freshener by adding cloves and cinnamon to boiling water, simmering and placing in a misting spray bottle once cooled.
